However its not a plant that many people grow in their patches, and the fruit has a limited number of uses.
Persimmons originate from Japan and are known there as the Fruit of the Gods.
Many of us may have only experienced the older astringent varieties, and not the sweeter new varieties such as 'Fuyu', 'Izu' and 'Ichikikei Jiro'.

The older varieties though are still edible, it's just that you need to let them ripen until they take on a consistency of apricot jam.
When they're not wondering at the beauty of their Persimmons the Burdett's are grazing through their garden bed that is Bill's pride and joy.
"I really just love being out here in the patch," he said. "I've always had one and I can't imagine not having one."

- Bill Burdett.
The patch contains all the standards including zucchini, cherry tomatoes, silverbeet, beans and a few other plants that are not so common in most people's patches.
Amongst those are a small selection of broad beans and globe artichokes.
With us all being asked to stay at home, Mr Burdett said he has no problem supplying the household with fresh vegetables.
"We really only need to go to the supermarket about once a week to get a few things that we don't grow."
Not everything that they grow though appeals to them both, especially one of the eggplant dishes that Bill particularly favours.
"It's Jamie Oliver's preserved eggplant recipe that's full of garlic and oil and it's delicious," he said.
For Liz though, it's not that great.
"It's far too oily," she said.
