The Mitchell Highway reopened around 9.06pm on Thursday night according to Live Traffic NSW.

The crash site was cleared and diversions were lifted.

The driver of a ute that crashed into a tree on Thursday afternoon has been transported to Sydney in a critical condition.

A NSW Ambulance Spokesperson confirmed the crash took place at Shadforth, South of Orange, at around 4.15pm on Thursday.

The driver was trapped for a short amount of time.

The man, 73, had significant chest injuries, along with injuries to the head, pelvis and abdomen. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance before being transported with the aeromedical team to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

He was the only person involved in the crash.

A person is trapped after a car crash at Shadforth on the Mitchell Highway on Thursday afternoon, January 11.

Emergency services, including the Toll helicopter, were called to the scene, between Pretty Plains Road and Millthorpe Road, at 4.26pm following reports of a crash.

The Mitchell Highway is closed in a both directions with drivers advised to use an alternative route.

Light vehicles can use Vittoria Road to Millthorpe and then Millthorpe Road to rejoin the Mitchell Highway in both directions.

Heavy vehicles can consider using Mid Western Highway from Bathurst to Blayney and then Millthorpe Road to rejoin the Mitchell Highway in both directions.
