That may seem like a fanciful idea, but thanks to a grant from the NSW government the remote control of Blayney Shire Council's lighting and irrigation systems are coming.
With a grant of $43,825 from the Crown Reserve Improvement Fund (CRIF), the first step in creating an integrated control system is on its way.
Manager of Water and Waste Water Charlie Harris said that the first stage would be the control of lighting systems before the irrigation.
"This will enable us to allow certain user groups set times to use the lighting," he said.
"For example if a football club wants to use King George between 5pm and 8pm every Tuesday night, the club would have access to turn them on and then they'd automatically turn off at 8pm."
The Central West Equestrian and Livestock Centre would also benefit from the lighting system, saving money for both council and users.
"At the moment the lighting is designed for competition purposes and is on full even during training rides," Mr Harris said.
"With this system we can dim the lights by 50 per cent which is fine for training and will save money."
The system would extend to Millthorpe's Redmond Oval's lighting system as well.
Beyond the lighting controls Mr Harris sees the system monitoring the shire's irrigation system with King George Oval being the first to benefit.
After that the council would look at the possibility of building controls in places like the community centre.
"If someone books it for a Saturday night we can give permission for that person to come in, open it at a particular time and it would open the doors and turn on the air conditioners," Mr Harris said.
"This will be the platform that we will spring from to become more of a smart city into the future. We can be more clever with how we operate and save money, water and electricity."
