About two weeks ago, in the dead of night, the seat disappeared, leaving the manager of the supermarket Geoff Bottom furious.

"I'm absolutely disgusted," he said. "That someone would do that is simply appalling."
Mr Bottom said that the seat was in constant use by the public, and the vast majority were the elderly who would miss it the most.
"They'd sit there and wait for either the community bus of the taxi or a family member to come along and pick them up after they'd done their shopping," he said.
The seat had been in place for 18 years and Mr Bottom said that whoever took it must have needed help.
"It was made out of sleepers and weighed a ton," he said. "We never thought of bolting it down because you could hardly budge it."
Mr Bottom said that plans were underway to replace it.
