A 2.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Lithgow at 5.13pm, it was recorded in local stations as well as ones as far away as the Central Coast.
Data from Geoscience Australia says the tremor was at a depth of 10 kilometres below the surface of the Earth.
The Lithgow Mercury asked its readers on social media if they had felt the quake and many responded that they hadn't realised what it was.
"Heard movement on my front porch like something was rattling around, went outside didn't see anything. Thought it might have been the neighbour's cats," Joanne Ryan posted.
While Roland Zopf Strange wrote: "Heard a crack/bang sound, thought the dog knocked something over. Nothing. Then though something outside, had a look, nothing. Went back inside."
Others stated that you would not feel such a small tremor.
While Mal Smith saw the funny side of it all and posted: "I heard a bang louder then that of the volcanic explosion of Krakatoa, the place shook from its foundation and now it's just a pile of rubble."
