Special Olympics Australia has announced Launceston as the host city for both the Special Olympics Australia Junior National Games for 2020 and the National Games for 2022.

The announcement was made by Special Olympics chief executive Corene Strauss, Premier Will Hodgman, and City of Launceston mayor Albert van Zetten during a press conference on Wednesday morning.
The state government will provide $500,000 in funding through Events Tasmania to support the events in Launceston.
The Launceston City Council is also providing funding, with $100,000 being put forward.
The games will cover 12 sports across multiple disciplines.
Approximately 2000 athletes are expected to attend the National Games and another 650 participants at the Junior Games.
Along with support teams, the number of people converging on the city for the events over the next four years is expected reach 3000.
