An unseasonably wet winter will not get in the way of the Carcoar Show.
Show organisers, Carcoar’s Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Society (PAHS), is pushing ahead with the 139th edition of the community event on October 29.
Groundskeeper and PAHS life member Peter Williams has been involved in the last 26 shows and said the weather had been unusual.
“I’ve never missed a show and I haven’t seen it this wet. We’ve had a lot of rain from May, a dry autumn and a wet winter,” Mr Williams said
PASH vice president Mark Richardson said the show would go on, but a final decision on the condition of the showgrounds would be made on Friday evening.
“The cattle section has been cancelled,” Mr Richardson said.
“The horse section, shearing, prime lambs and yard dogs will be subject to a final decision on Friday evening. When we know, everyone else will know.”
Mr Richardson said the pressure was mounting for the organising committee with 27 other agricultural shows around NSW calling their events off.
The Carcoar Show is one of the final events that horse exhibitors have to score points in so they can qualify for the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
“Grenfell have rescheduled their horse show to coincide with our show so horse exhibitors can get their points and enter the Sydney Royal,” Mr Richardson said.
“The other 27 shows being cancelled puts more pressure on us as organisers. The decision is not made flippantly, there’s a lot of money involved to keep the show going.
“(The show) is a focal point for the Carcoar community, not just the exhibitors.”
The need to inspect the grounds hasn’t stopped organisers adding to the show schedule.
A new art contest has been added called the art recycle competition for infants, primary and secondary students as well as adults, there’s also sections for home products, flowers, crafts, photography, gum leaf and colouring in competitions.
Paintball will replace the cancelled cattle section.
