Blayney Bears hosted Gulgong last Saturday in what you would describe as a great day for the ducks and farmers, but how can we complain about the rain when we haven't seen it for so long. With Gulgong coming to Blayney on a high from beating Portland the previous week, Blayney had other ideas.

With Gulgong kicking off and Blayney knocking on in the first set of six, then giving away a penalty for a head high it looked like Gulgong might have been the goods. But Blayney turned things around with a charge down by Luke McKenna with the ball going back to Robbie then through a few sets of hands to end with Dom Langham. He then put in the kick over the top with Glen Nunn flying through and taking the ball in the air and scoring under the posts to see Blayney with first points in the match. Dom converted to give Blayney a lead of 6-0. Ten minutes later Blayney scored their second try with a penalty to Blayney in front of their own line. The ball making its way to Grant Cocks and seeing him run the length of the field to score next to the posts. Dom's conversion taking the lead to 12-0. With another penalty to Blayney in their half and with some great hands from left to right Coxy was again over the line, this time out wide. Dom's conversion slided wide but the Bears increased their lead to 16-0. Four minutes later again with some good ball work and a great pass from Macca to Coxy he was in for his third try. Dom's conversion from the side line again going a little wide but taking the lead to 20-0. With Blayney heading for their line again 6 minutes later this time the team sent Robbie Buesnel over the line. Nunny's conversion attempt not making the mark but Blayney now taking the lead out to 24-0.
From the return kick with a good take in mid field PJ Hillier made good yards before getting the ball away to Coxy on the 40 metre line to run through the opposition with a step inside to head to the line for his fourth try scoring under the posts. He was lucky not to collide with the post on his way through due to turning and indicating to the crowd this is number 4. Gavin's conversion took Blayney's lead into half time 30-0.
With the start of the second half Blayney were again first to score in the first 4 minutes with some great lead up work from Harry to Ronnie getting the ball to Swany who scored next to the posts, Gavin converting to see Blayney increase their lead to 36-0. Blayney's next try saw captain/coach Ron Hartigan barge his way over with Gavin converting to forge further ahead 42-0. Four minutes later Nunny sent Chris Abbott over out wide for a well deserved try. Gavin's conversion took the unanswered lead to 48-0. Seven minutes later Nunny scored his second try for the day again out wide, this time Gavin missing with the conversion taking Blayney's lead to 52-0.
With 8 minutes left in the game Gulgong were able to post some points scoring a fluky try under the posts from a kick through towards their line. Blayney tried to kick the ball dead only to Falcon off Nunny back into play to see Gulgong gather in front of the posts and score their only points of the day. The final score seeing Blayney take the honors 52-6. Try scorers for Blayney Grant Cock (4), Glenn Nunn (2), Robbie Buesnel, Ronnie Hartigan, Mick Swan and Chris Abbott. Conversions Dom Langham 2/4, Glenn Nunn 0/1 and Gavin Hoad 4/5.
Captain/Coach Ron Hartigan and management should be very pleased with the way the team played this game. The Bears really hit their straps in this game as a team, ball handling (like they were playing in the dry, instead of in the pouring rain) the forwards doing their job going forward and the backs doing their job scoring some great tries and the halves combining well together to get the ball out. These combinations just gelled and with a great bench to back them up, (also with four guys missing out, thanks Muggo for volunteering to step down and run the water) we should hopefully see a good run towards the finals. The team and management would like to send a big thanks to Gary Hoad and Dallas Battle for filling in as strappers for the last two games while Leo has been holidaying, even taking in the third State of Origin in Melbourne. Also to Luke and Ben Battle for doing the job of ball boys, especially in the pouring rain.
Team and management would also like to take this opportunity in thanking the last of their valued sponsors, Video Parlour, Emms Mooney and Co, Harris and Meekin, B P Garage, Tyrepower, Blayney Sports Store, Paul Kevin Chem World, Peter O'Brien Construction, Kingham's Butchery and Quality Building Supplies.
This week sees The Bears heading down to Blackheath on Sunday July 9 with a 2 30 pm kick off. So for those of you that like to take a Sunday drive go just that little bit further to Blackheath and help cheer on the boys, hopefully to another big win. The previous two wins see The Bears fourth on the ladder 1 point behind Portland, who has the bye this week. With a win against Blackheath, away and then the home ground advantage against Portland on the 16th, if we can get a win here, this will see us go into 3rd spot ahead of Portland. This should see some big games, against Kandos and Lithgow Bears coming up. So come along and cheer the guys on.
And don't forget to come along to the Royal Hotel after the games and see Darren and his friendly staff for a cold ale and post match celebrations with the team.
