King George Oval is getting new changerooms and CentrePoint's pool has already received a major rebuild.
So popular is the new pool that closing it to replace the corroding and ineffective roof will no doubt cause grief for users, the YMCA and Blayney Shire Council.
It's an indoor facility so there's no real good time to do it.
- Mark Dicker.
But close it they must because unlike other sections that are to be replaced, pretty much the entire centre except for the old scout hall, the entire ceiling and roof over the pool is scheduled to be replaced, just as the weather warms.
Delays in the delivery of acoustic baffles from Europe has meant that the pool, which was supposed to be closed over winter, will be shut in the months leading up to summer.
Over the dry courts, entry way and gymnasium the roofing will be replaced in stages, allowing some parts of the centre to continue to operate.
Even then though the scope of works means that parts of the centre will need to close, even when the roof above isn't being repaired explains council's Director of Planning and Environmental Services Mark Dicker.
"They'll be starting over the dry courts on the western part and should take about a week before they move onto the front gym," he said.
"After that they'll move onto the entry way and the mezzanine level."
Finding workers to complete the work during COVID lockdowns hasn't been easy, however using one local firm will help ensure a safe installation.
"Blayney Cranes will be doing most of the work however you can't be under a moving crane so it's going to impact what areas are open and not open," Mr Dicker said.
"Once we're working on the pool area though the gym should be open."
The bad news for the swimmers is that the pool will be closed from October 5 through to early to mid December.
"It's an indoor facility so there's no real good time to do it," Mr Dicker said. "We had planned to do it earlier but with the weather we've had we're glad we didn't because it would have been significantly delayed."
