An existing tailings storage facility has been out of action since a wall was breached in March 2018.

An information meeting for residents who live near the mine site was held in Orange last week.

Cadia's Acting General Manager, Aaron Brannigan said the meeting was told the mining company was looking into the possibility of a new tailings storage facility.

"Cadia outlined its plans to conduct a drilling program, on property adjacent to the mine, which will assess the feasibility of a new TSF site should one be required for future operations," he said.

Mr Brannigan said residents were also updated on the work that is continuing into a pre-feasibility study about repairing the damaged wall.

He said the study should be completed in the current financial year.

The meeting was also told about plans to realign a "small section" of Cadia road for future mining operations.

Mr Brannigan said that work had been approved in the 2010 Cadia East Project Approval.

In this year's March quarterly report Newcrest managing director and CEO Sandeep Biswas said it was likely the cost of repairing the tailings dam wall would be less than $100 million.

He said three plans for repairing the wall were being considered.

Cadia has been using its disused open pit mine to take tailings from its operations.

Last year it applied for approval to increase the capacity of the open pit to take 177 million tonnes more tailings which equates to seven years more use.

Mr Brannigan said the mining company regularly updated residents.

"Newcrest Mining's Cadia Valley Operations provides regular and proactive information to its neighbours and recently hosted a Cadia District Residents meeting to present a general update on Cadia's current and future operations," he said.

"Cadia continues to provide regular updates to its community."
