When the notion of applying for the role of Blayney Showgirl was put to Sally Nicholls in 2019, she admits to being quite mistaken about what the role entails.

"I thought it was more along the lines of a beauty pageant, but looking at it more it's about agriculture, about community involvement and meeting and talking to people," she said.

That decision to take part has opened Ms Nicholls' eyes to what happens in the Blayney community.

"It's been an incredible year and I've had so many opportunities to speak to so many people and doing a lot of things that I probably wouldn't have done otherwise," she said.

Her experience in the role has transformed her opinion on what the role actually is all about and what sort of person it suits.

"We need to break down that barrier about what people think it's about," she said.

"We need to celebrate that it's all about being community focused and agriculturally based."

The 2020 Blayney Show is on Saturday March 14.
