This summer's Big Bash League shapes as arguably the most important yet regarding the national selection debate.

Australia is hosting the 2020 T20 World Cup, with the BBL to serve as an ideal platform for anybody keen to boost their hopes of a call-up for the international tournament that starts in October.

Hughes, the leading run-scorer in this season's domestic one-day competition with 440 runs at 73.33 for NSW, was overlooked for recent home T20s against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The 30-year-old, floated by some pundits as a potential candidate to open alongside David Warner in the Test XI before Joe Burns' recall, knows runs are the only way to ensure he remains in the mix for the World Cup squad.

"You've always got that at the back of your mind, national selection. You always want to play for Australia," Hughes told reporters.

"I think they sort of know what direction they want to go but someone might put their name up there with a good Big Bash campaign.

"I haven't heard too much from the selectors or Justin (Langer) but that's OK. It's a pretty strong team at the moment, so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully one day that opportunity might come."

Langer will on Tuesday reveal the touring party that will visit India in January, Australia's first 50-over engagement since their semi-final World Cup loss to England.

Selectors are expected to make several changes to the 2019 World Cup squad but Hughes, speaking as the Sixers prepared to open their BBL campaign against Perth at the SCG on Wednesday night, downplayed his prospects of a call-up.

"Potentially. If they talk about form in the Marsh Cup, maybe I might be a chance," he said.

"But I also think with the T20 World Cup around the corner, they might be trying to give those guys (certain to be in the T20 squad) some more opportunities.

"There was an opportunity at the start of the Test summer with that opening spot ... but Burnsy has made that his own."
