The fallen rock detached from a large overhanging section approximately 20-25 metres above track level and it immediately put a stop to trains passing through the Glenbrook area.
As engineers worked to stabilise the boulder and then remove it, Sydney Trains said a "culturally significant Aboriginal hand print artwork" was discovered.

Commuters were delayed during the works with buses replacing trains between Penrith and Springwood.
On the weekend, however, Sydney Trains advised the works were now complete.
"Train services have resumed between Penrith and Springwood this morning following the completion of stabilisation and boulder removal works at Glenbrook," it said in a statement.
"Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time."
