The Blayney Under 17 representative netball team fulfilled their coach Louise Hamer’s determination that the team would end up towards the top of the division three table, and the girls did just that, finishing at number four from a pool of 21.
The teams sat only a few points behind Brunswick – Byron who placed first, Muswellbrook who came second and Tamworth who finished third.
The Netball NSW Samsung State Championships were held in Gosford in less than perfect conditions with rain over two days of the three day competition really testing their skills.
Finishing in the top five was just awesome.
- Louise Hamer
“Sunday was a really difficult day’s play because unlike Saturday when we had showers, on Sunday it was torrential,” Hamer said. “They were absolutely soaked, but their ball security was fantastic and we managed to get through play with no injuries at all.”
Hamer believes that the side’s success lay in their long term playing relationship, and their never give in attitude.
“Five of them have been playing together since they were in the under 11’s so they all supported each other and all up they only lost five games across the weekend but managed to keep their points average up,”
Hamer said that after coaching this representative side for six years, finishing where they did was the perfect way to finish her coaching career.
“Finishing in the top five was just awesome,” Hamer said.
“I couldn’t have asked for more of them, and to get that result when there are only nine of them, some teams had ten and even some had thirteen, it’s a real credit to them.”
Along with long-term manager Amanda Townsend this is the final representative match for Chelsea Oldham, Leah Narducci, Chelsea Hamer, Abby Stammers and Mardy Townsend.
