Mudgee’s Mark Hale might have missed the cut at the NSW Open held at Twin Creeks last week, but the big-hitting right hander didn’t languish on any disappointment for long.
After shooting 77 and then 73 on Thursday and Friday to miss the cut at the NSW Open by seven shots, Hale traveled back from Sydney’s west on Saturday to take part in the Blayney Open on Sunday, where he went on to claim a two-stroke victory and lift his second open trophy for the season.
The Bathurst Open champ fired 107 in what Blayney Golf Club president Mick Miskell described as tricky conditions.
Hale embraced the challenge, though, edging Duntryleague duo Rob Payne and Rob Parfett, with scores of 109 and 110 respectively over the 27-hole open.
“Looks as though he missed the cut and came home,” Miskell said alluding to Hale’s presence in the field.
Had he made the cut at the NSW Open, he would have been playing at Twin Creeks on Sunday and not Blayney.
“It’s great to get those guys out here, though. We had a good show up from the Orange guys and the locals as well, 54 all up, which is great.”
Miskell said rain in the lead-up to the event ensured the course was in great condition.
“But the wind, it was hard conditions. It was a pretty brutal first two nines. That 107, it’s a pretty good score with slow greens as well.”
