Merle Nicholls and Rene Chapman were students at the school in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s and were helped to cut the specially baked cake by kindergarten students Lucinda Cornally and Lucas Woods.
One of the features of the school is a weeping birch tree that the children believe is inhabited by fairies, and two students, Sam Kingham and Will Beetson, helped Millthorpe Village Committee member Sam Yeates and the school’s caretaker Graeme Smith to plant another one next to it.
The highlight of the day was also the cracking open of a time capsule that was buried at the school in 1967.
The contents included some copper pennies from as far back as 1950, a ten shilling note, several letters and notes from students that were at school at the time and a copy of the Central Western Daily from November 17 1967.
A picture book called Millthorpe in Words and Pictures was also launched on the day and it included many images taken by former students of the school.
