Payne won last year’s title as part of a remarkable stretch of wins that included victories at the Country Club, Duntryleague and Wentworth Opens to sit alongside his triumph at Blayney.
And while Payne didn’t enjoy the same success at last weekend’s Country Club Open he does enter this year’s tournament with winning form under his belt after triumphing in the City of Orange Classic over the October long weekend.
Blayney Golf Club president Mick Miskell confirmed Payne as a starter for Sunday’s 27-hole open, with fellow Duntryleague members Mal Gregor and Wayne Carpenter tipped to challenge.
“Michael Tyrell, Gary Keen, Tony Smith, there’s a few local guys all playing well in the field, but Payney’s going to be hard to beat,” Miskell said.
Miskell said a score sub-100 will win the tournament: “Anything under that is around the money.”
Tee-off is at 7.30am.
