Claiming that someone ‘punches like a girl’ could well become a term of strength, especially if you’re talking about the participants of a new self defence course that’s running at the CentrePoint Sports and Leisure Centre.

Developed by Blayney High School student Jennifer Farmer as part of the RAISE mentoring program, the classes are held every Tuesday afternoon at the centre.
“I’m really pleased with the response that we’ve had so far,” Farmer said.
“We’ve gone from only five in the first week to eleven this week.”
Boxing coach Brenda Smith said that she was teaching the girls how to punch properly and effectively, as well as what part of the body to attack.
“I’ll show them all of the places to punch a man, in places other than the groin,” she said
“I’ll be showing the girls that if they get into a situation, how to get out of it unscathed, which is important for any women, I think.”
