Local ambassador for the war on waste, Patricia McKenna, took steps to make a difference after watching a series on ABC TV.

“The level of waste going to landfill on a daily basis is sickening,” McKenna said.

McKenna, who owns the local Millthorpe Providore, is interested in gaining support from local businesses across from Millthorpe, Blayney, the villages and Orange.

“The problem is there are no recycling bins for all the local businesses. I have now made changes to my business to only use recyclable cutlery, containers, soup containers and paper bags. The only problem is the take away coffee cups cannot be recycled.”

The Millthorpe Providore serves large amounts of coffee on a daily basis and McKenna has introduced an idea to save the waste on coffee cups.

“We are selling key reusable coffee cups whereby the customer buys their cup and brings it back each time to buy a coffee or tea,” McKenna said. “The first coffee is free and now we are offering 20 per cent off with any purchase of coffee or any hot drink. You may even bring it in and we will clean it for you.”

The Millthorpe community is also keen to look into the large amounts of green waste going to landfill. At present there are no green waste bins in the village, so your writer is looking at proposing a compost area in Millthorpe in addition to approaching Oz Harvest. GO THE MIGHTY TIGERS

The newly refurbished Redmond Oval came alive on Saturday with the mighty Millthorpe Tigers displaying some fine soccer skills. Millthorpe switched on the fine weather to host teams ranging from under six to under-12. Whilst the Tigers were not victorious across all games, the teams played well with some excellent games of soccer and very close scores.
