Blayney’s Nyree Reynolds has painted five different art works which will represent the district’s Wiradjuri people.

Ms Reynolds said a story would be told across the five paintings which she had completed over 12 months.

Her artwork has previously featured on Blayney Shire Council’s billboards.

“This is the next stage of that recognition of the shire’s Wiradjuri heritage,” she said.

One of the paintings was inspired by rock art Ms Reynolds had seen and was a map displaying significant sites around the shire.

Ms Reynolds said the map, completed with consultations from the Bathurst elders could grow over time with help from hospital staff.

As well as the artworks, the hospitals internal signs will be updated to display English and Wiradjuri words and etchings will be displayed on hospital doors.

Featured in Ms Reynolds paintings are healing and smoking ceremony leaves – these leaves will be part of those etchings.

Health service manager Kathy Hillier said the addition of the Wiradjuri language was about celebrating the shire’s Aboriginal heritage and making indigenous residents feel more welcome in the hospital.

Mrs Hillier said that as well as celebrating the area’s Wiradjuri history, it was hoped the bilingual signs would encourage more Aboriginal people to visit the hospital.

“It’s part of a Western NSW Local Health District drive to make hospitals feel more accessible,” she said.

The paintings and signs will be unveiled during National Reconciliation Week on Thursday June 1.

The ceremony will include a barbecue, flag raising, speech by elder Aunty Gloria Rogers as well as dance performances from West Bathurst’s Wagona group and Blayney’s early learning students.

It will begin from 11am.

The program has been supported by Blayney Shire Council. Mayor Scott Ferguson said it helped create connections with area’s traditional owners.
