Blayney trainer Phil Bourke, who trains Mister Haywood for his mother Harriet Bourke, said that the pacer was up against Remember Mac , another pacer that came from the same sire as Mister Haywood, Abercrombie Dexter.
It won’t be the first time the pair have met though, they came up against each other during a race at the Bathurst Paceway last Sunday.
“My bloke ran third and Mac ran sixth out of the field of ten,” Bourke said.
Driving his own pacer, Bourke said that Mister Haywood got a good start in Sunday’s race but the distance of 2250 metres may have been against him.
“I had to go back and I was sitting, I think, about second or third last, but my bloke made up a bit of ground and I actually thought he was a bit of a chance to win but once we got down the straight he couldn’t lift and take up that extra three metres,” he said.
Of Mister Haywood’s nine starts Bourke has ridden him across the line for four of them.
“I’m one of the bigger fellows doing the rounds and I’ve got three places out of those four runs so I’m pretty happy with my result,” he said.
Into the future Bourke sees Mister Haywood as been a worthy competitor to his mate Remember Mac.
“He’s going to be a nice horse and we’re going to have a lot of fun with him and I’ve been very pleased with him and in a race a few weeks ago I said to my wife that the only thing that will beat him is bad luck,” he said.
