Twenty five students came along and enjoyed the challenge of constructing a tower out of dry pasta and marshmallows.
Students worked in small teams with 10 marshmallows and 12 pieces of dry pasta to construct the highest tower that they could.
The group had to make sure that the tower would stay upright for at least three seconds for their measurement to count.
After many attempts one of the teams was able to make a tower that was an amazing 63cms in height.
This task had students experimenting with shapes to find the strongest supports for their tower.
This week and next we are moving on to exploring bridges and how they support weight. Ours will be made out of paper. Wish us luck.
Minnie Vinnies Launched
St Joseph’s Minnie Vinnies program is designed for students to be aware of social justice issues and take action to promote a fair and just world for all.
Our students never seem to surprise us with their care for each other and their community.
Our first meeting was based around the recent bushfires that have affected several NSW communities and the people that live there.
The Minnie Vinnies team decided to take action by inviting students to wear a splash of red, yellow or orange with their school sport uniforms on Wednesday February 22.
The Minnie Vinnies treasurer also asked for a gold coin donation to support people who are doing it a little tough.
High School Science class
At Blayney High School term one sees science classes learning about acids.
This topic includes identifying acids, substance separation, neutralisation reactions and much more.
Many of these are learnt through hands on, first hand investigations.
Energy Transformation was demonstrated in an outdoor practical lesson, where magnifying glasses are used to transfer light energy from the sun into heat energy in the water.
Most of the students managed to raise the temperature of the water by a minimum of 3 degrees.
