DESPITE the heat and with a vastly inexperienced side, Blayney Public School produced two remarkable performances to claim the 2016 Primary School Sports Association girls cricket title on Tuesday.

The Blayney girls knocked off a fancied Newport Public School in their final four clash, earning the winning runs via a wide on the final ball of their semi-final clash.
While in the final, chasing Tamworth Public School’s 3-103, Matt Dunn’s team needed 22 runs off the final four overs to win.
They did it – thanks largely to skipper Erryn Payne and Chloe Read – easily, too, securing the 2016 title with an over to spare.
Excited coach Matt Dunn and his victorious team returned to school on Wednesday clutching the coveted trophy.
“I think (Tuesday) aged me 10 years,” Dunn laughed, recalling the final-ball Newport win.
“We’ve played (Newport) in the semis for the last three years and they’ve beaten us in close games.
“In the end we scored two runs because they bowled a wide and then we hit another run on the next ball.”
After a memorable semi-final win, Blayney then had to field in 35 degree heat at Maitland during the final against Tamworth.
They did so brilliantly, restricting their opposition to a total just over 100 before all batters contributed to the title winning chase.
“Skipper Erryn Payne and Chloe Read came together and managed to hit the winning runs with an over to spare,” Dunn continued.
“The win was amazing. We were the only team that fielded Year 4 students and we had four of them, along with three Year 5 girls.
“Unlike previous years when we had many representative players, this year there were only two.
“In fact only three of our team play cricket at the weekend. It’s a testament to the training at school and the girls’ willingness to learn the game.”
