The incessant rain has meant that the club has foregone three months of playing, and the income that comes with it.
Add to that a break-in which the club saw valuable equipment stolen, and it’s no doubt that the club was at breaking point.
That rain though created the perfect conditions for a tense and exciting McArdles Blayney Open.
President Mick Miskell said that the greens were looking superb and played incredibly well during the Open.
“It’s the best they’ve been,’ he said, “The greens are in top condition and have been really steady.”
Committee member Wayne Fenwick agreed and said that the Open was one of the best that he’s seen.
‘Before the rain we were sucking the dregs out from the bottom of the dam, the rain has really set the greens up for a great summer,” he said.
“After the first 18 Mal Gregor was leading with 69 off the stick, with Peter Kirwan on 70 and Robert Payne on 71,” he said.
Duntryleague’s Payne though battled through his knee injury and capitalising on his stablemate Gregor’s poor last nine holes, came through as victor.
“On his last nine Payne hit a 33 totalling 104, Cowra’s Kirwan hit 36 totalling 106 and Gregor had a rough last round hitting 37,” Fenwick said.
