Blayney Shire Council Mayor, Scott Ferguson said the Schools Tree Day event marks the beginning of a long-term environmental program.
“It’s a great opportunity for local students to join in a fun, hands on activity that can reinforce their environmental, maths, science and creative arts learning or simply contribute to creating beautiful school grounds.”
Council is working in partnership with Planet Ark and has invited all local schools including the Heritage Small Schools, Blayney Public School, Blayney High School, Millthorpe and St Joseph’s to get involved in the tree planting morning.
Cr Ferguson said the planting will support and enhance the REVIVE project at Pound Flat in Carcoar that has already seen regrowth, control of weeds and the area re-established for recreation and nature regeneration.
“Council has started to form mown pathways which will provide the area with better access for the public.” he said, “Council has also engaged a contractor to fence the area in order to delineate the plantings from the walkway. These components will be complete once the weather and conditions improve.”
“Cr Ferguson said that council was proud of the biodiversity created at the site courtesy of the works already finished.
“It is anticipated more wildlife in the area will be attracted to the site as the habitat grows to maturity which will make for a positive community and tourist attraction in years to come,” he said.
