First as Hazel’s, and later run by Alison Byrne, it provided a regular meeting point for quilting groups to get together, hone their skills, and catch up with what was what in the village.
When Alison moved to Queensland last year, the shop closed but two of the groups maintained the tradition, relocating to the CWA Hall and becoming the Millthorpe So & Sews.
Last weekend, the groups got together to celebrate another part of that tradition, the annual Mother’s Day workshop, organised by the Friday group.
A dozen quilters gathered in the CWA Hall and had a most enjoyable and productive time creating Presto Pinwheels quilts and catching up on the news.
Lock your doors
THERE has been a spate of thefts in the village in the past couple of weeks .
Upwards of a dozen residents have been victims of the thefts, the culprits often sneaking in quickly through unlocked or open doors to take cash.
Police have told the Murmurs they are taking the matter seriously and are well on the road to identifying the perpetrators, but they strongly recommend residents keep their doors and windows closed and locked unless they are in use.
While this goes against the grain in an open community such as Millthorpe, it is just good practice to protect yourself and your belongings from quick, opportunistic theft while you are away from the house, or even in one part of the house while another part is left unattended.
Garden club visit
NEXT Wednesday, May 18, the Millthorpe Garden Club will have its monthly meeting at the Orange Botanic Gardens for a tour of the facility by the staff.
Members and visitors should gather under the awning near the buildings by noon, and don't forget to bring your lunch, chair and walking shoes for comfort and sustenance.
The club’s April gathering was well attended by members who were shown around the garden of our local pharmacist Amanda Watts. It was a delightful day, and thanks go to the ever-cheerful Amanda.
New members are always welcome to join in the club’s activities. For further information call Kerrie on 6365 5150.
