Corporal Ryan was serving as an advanced medical technician in the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team at Kwajeh Ahmed.
Corporal Ryan was seriously injured by an improvised explosive device while under enemy fire on March 24 2009.
Despite his injuries, Corporal Ryan acted selflessly by moving to administer life saving first aid to two soldiers were were also injured in the explosion.
After administering first aid to the other soldiers, he treated his own wounds and continued to monitor and provide sound advice on the casualties.
