Parkes residents Andrew Swan and Beau Newell contacted the National Party member’s office on Monday to request a meeting and have used the Facebook page to urge people to call his office and register their support for same-sex marriage.
Mr Swan said the Facebook page has tremendous support within the Calare electorate and had received around 2000 likes in seven days.
Mr Cobb has expressed his doubts about the Facebook page’s local support.
“Unfortunately there is no way of validating that the majority or otherwise of the likes on this Facebook page are from constituents of Calare and that at least one is a South Australian senator (Penny Wong). Mr Cobb said his office is keeping a log of all correspondence from his constituents.
“Correspondence from constituents is always responded to,” Mr Cobb said.
Mr Cobb said he fully supports a formalised same-sex union but maintains a marriage is between a man and a woman and said he has been very clear about his views on this subject for a long time.
“The federal Coalition, when previously in government, implemented a range of measures to address discrimination against gay and lesbian couples, and remains committed to maintaining the Australian tradition of tolerance and respect,” he said.
“However, the Coalition does not support any change to commonwealth law which may have the effect of diminishing the institution of marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman.”
Mr Cobb said he would continue to support the federal Coalition’s position on this issue.
