Socceroos striker Nathan Burns’ parents Ray and Denise, of Blayney, will make the trip to Sydney to see Australia - and hopefully their son - take on Korea Republic in the sold-out AFC Asian Cup final.
So far the former Blayney 88s junior has played 110 minutes across three games, starting in one, with no goals from six shots. He is boasting a 93 per cent pass accuracy though, giving his father a feeling the 26-year-old will get an opportunity tonight.
“It should be good, we’re going down, hopefully he gets a run,” Ray laughed.
“I think he probably will [tonight]. He’s fit, and he’s looked good and dangerous when he’s been on.
“He’s jumping out of his skin, he’s just raring to go.”
The Wellington Phoenix front man is one of only a handful of surviving Socceroos from the 2011 Asian Cup campaign in Qatar, in which Australia finished second. He didn’t take the field in the final.
“It’s just great for him [to be a part of the Asian Cup again], that’s the main thing,” Ray said.
“It’s well documented he’s had a bad knees for a while, and this is the first time he’s been fit from round one.
“You know, this is what he’s been striving for, to play on the world stage against the best.
“And that’s what they’re doing. Playing against the best in Asia.”
Ray refused to hazard a prediction at Saturday night's final score, but went as far as saying “the Socceroos will win”.
The competition - win or lose on Saturday night - is also set to offer the Socceroos players a plethora of new opportunities, with Burns already fielding a multimillion offer from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.
The deal on offer for the Blayney product is believed to come with an annual net salary close to $2.5 million, but so far the Phoenix have reportedly refused to consider selling the 26-year-old.
The Socceroos kick off against Korea Republic at 8pm.
