The inaugural Pym Street Markets has been postponed until the Saturday of the October Long Weekend (October 4) due to a few teething problems.
After that it's hoped to become a regular Millthorpe feature on the first Saturday of each month, from 9am to 1pm.
Organiser Elwyn Lang says "At this stage, we have eight local stallholders booked, selling all sorts of items and produce. [The Markets] should be a great acquisition for our village."
The Markets will be located on the small block beside the General Store in Pym Street. Because of the small space, it will be a boutique market selling interesting items not normally available in the Millthorpe shops.
For information on the Markets or about becoming a stallholder, contact the ever-energetic Elwyn at the General Store or on 0429 721 266.
"Team Lilly" ready to Ride for Cancer
Millthorpe residents Tonya Graham, Libby McFeeters, Vanessa Connick and David Mitchell are getting their leg muscles ready for this year's 200km Ride to Conquer Cancer in Sydney on the weekend of October 11-12.
The ride, which last year attracted over one thousand participants, is split into two 100km days with a night in between spent under canvas on the banks of the Hawkesbury River at Windsor.
Tonya, Libby and Vanessa have all been touched by close family members and friends battling cancer.
Sadly, Tonya and Libby have both lost their mothers to cancer. Funds raised from the ride go to the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, a world-class cancer treatment and research facility at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney.
On September 5, they held a "Bollywood" Dinner at Tonic to begin raising the contribution needed to participate in the Ride. Generous Millthorpians have so far contributed over $10,000, and you can still donate by going to http://sy14@conquer cancer.org.au, finding "Team Lilly" and choosing one of the four to donate through.
Spring Hill Spring Fair
Spring Hill Community & Progress Association is organising an old-fashioned fair at the Recreation Ground on November 22. If you'd like to take part with a stall, car boot sale, display car or food and drink provision, give Jan Davies a call at the Spring Hill Post Office, 6365 5210.
From the archives: Sparrows were a problem
Our Golden Memories Museum has unearthed in its archives press reports indicating that in 1902 an influx of sparrows in town were a definite hazard.
The Blayney Advocate and Carcoar Herald of May 3 that year reported "Some united action will have to be taken before long for the extermination, or, at any rate, the thinning out of the sparrows, thousands of which are about the town and district.
"Large flocks of them may be seen in the paddock opposite the railway station, also about the mill and many other places. For their own protection, farmers will have to deal with them.
What with rabbits, briars, sparrows, and other pests, the settler's life is not a very happy one."
