It is still some weeks away but preparations for the annual Carcoar Show are well underway. One of the highlights of this year's show will be the 'Scarecrow Competition'. According to Libby Pickett, who is one of the competition organisers, you are limited only by your imagination. So put your creative thinking caps (or straw hats) on and start preparing your entries to be included in the following categories: 'Scarecrow Group' (up to three scarecrow figures), 'Celebrity Scarecrow' (individual or scarecrow couple) and 'Created by a Primary School Child' or children (up to three scarecrows). Entry fee is just $1 per entry and your scarecrows need to be at the showground on the afternoon of Friday, October 24 between 3pm and 5pm or before 9am Saturday, October 25 for display. If the weather looks threatening please provide a tarp/shelter for your display. There is a cash prize for the overall winner and blue ribbons for each category. In the Footsteps of the Wiradjuri:
If you have ever wondered about the history of the First People of this district, you will enjoy the discovery tour being run by the Historical Society on Tuesday, October 14. Bill Allen, of the Wiradjuri tribe which has inhabited the Bathurst area for thousands of years, will be leading an excursion taking in the principal sacred sites and historic remains of his ancestors. We expect to visit the grave of Windradyne, and the initiation sites on Mount Panorama, among others. It will be a day's outing with a picnic lunch. The cost will be $10 per person for the commentary plus a fee for hire of the bus. Laurel Thomas, (telephone 6367 3153) will be pleased to take your advance bookings. 'Pound Flat' Makeover:
The Carcoar Urban Landcare Group is pleased to announce that Blayney Shire has been successful in obtaining through the 2014-15 Public Reserves Management Fund Program a total of $54,000 for the Pound Flat project. This money will be allocated for weed eradication, native habitat enhancement and restorative work along the Belubula River in the Pound Flat area. This is a joint project between Blayney Shire Council and the Carcoar Urban Landcare Group which began last year with the planting of 80 trees. The project has also received funding from the LCMA for fencing and clean up. Any volunteers who would like to donate their energy and time to move the project along can contact Eric Foote on 0427 166 273.
'Living the Sweet Life':
Within a relatively short period Shalom has well and truly established itself as a hub for events which continue to attract people from an ever widening radius. Last Sunday it hosted a long lunch which was presided over by guest speaker Kate Bracks. A mother of three and winner of Masterchef 2011, Kate spoke at length about her journey, from her childhood cooking at about age 6 or 7 through to her time spent filming Masterchef when she was away for seven and a half months. For someone who now spends much of her time cooking, eating and discussing food it may surprise many to learn that Kate would not have become the kitchen wiz she is today had she continued down her childhood path as a fussy eater. As a youngster she loved sweet things and wasn't interested in meat, veg or fruit. Thanks to a wonderfully supportive husband she has managed to create a meaningful life for herself and her family combining motherhood, baking, business management, cooking demonstrations, recipe writing and the occasional appearance on TV.
If you didn't have the opportunity to attend this event then be sure not to miss out on the next one. For further details of upcoming Shalom events check out the following link: http://www.bathurst.catholic.org.au/?i=1554&newsletter
