The Annual General Meeting of the Millthorpe Village Committee was held on Wednesday, August 21.
Outgoing President John Mason was able to report a year of strong progress for the Committee and the many developments it has fostered in the village.
Excellent relations have been maintained with Blayney Shire Council, helping in negotiations to secure a substantial reduction in sewerage rates for residents, and resealing of roads in central Millthorpe.
Implementation of the joint BSC/MVC Local Enhancement Plan is proceeding well.
Negotiations with NSW Trains to get the Dubbo XPT to stop at Millthorpe are gaining traction, with support from MPs, BSC, and a group seeking to improve public transport for Orange. Discussions between MVC, Paul Toole MP and NSW Trains are scheduled soon to look at implementation.
The NBN service, which was strongly supported by the MVC, is now being constructed and should be available in the village within 12 months. The President commented that "because of the importance of an NBN service to the future of the village, supporting it was the right action for MVC to take".
"The work that has been done on Mill Green and the new niche wall at the cemetery is a credit to all", he said.
He also recognised the work of Peter Whiley in making and installing a picnic table and seats at the Green, and also a bench outside the school.
These and many other activities combined to make Millthorpe a finalist in the Tidy Towns 2014 Awards, with the growth of a vibrant business sector a strong contributor to that success.
Mr Mason thanked Business Committee President, Randall Edwards, for his continuing vision, dedication and hard work on behalf of businesses, which are the lifeblood of the village.
Mr Edwards reported that membership of the Business Committee was more than 50 and growing.
Two-thousand and six-hundred dollars had been spent on regional TV advertising of the village, and more than $2,000 on 10,000 Visitor Guides, most of which had been distributed requiring a reprint. Radio advertising in Sydney was being considered.
The millthorpevillage.com.au website averages 2,500 visitors a month, and an active Millthorpe Facebook page is run by Mary Debere.
MVC has become a member of Taste Orange, participating in their Guide to the Orange area.
Other media publicity has been achieved through the year.
The Millthorpe Garden Ramble Subcommittee reported that ten gardens were ready to participate in this year's Ramble on the weekend of 1-2 November.
Seventy different gardens have participated during the Ramble's 10-year history, helping to contribute nearly $43,000 to funds, much of which will soon assist in building a new kiosk at Redmond Oval.
The Garden Club Subcommittee's members continue to provide gardening activities and knowledge for locals with nine garden visits and many guest speakers during the past year.
The newly formed Redmond Oval Subcommittee has as its goals to make the oval an even greater and more useful asset for the village, and to strengthen co-ordination with BSC and all oval users to bring that about.
The majority of Millthorpe sporting clubs, the school P&C, and Millthorpe Markets are already members.
The growth in importance of the subcommittee structure of the MVC has caused changes to the main Committee structure, with representatives of each subcommittee now members of the MVC executive.
At the election of office bearers for 2014-2015, John Mason was returned as President, Ian Rogan as Secretary, Randall Edwards as Treasurer, Alvaro Marques as Vice President and Laurie Williams as Publicity Officer.
Jo Angri was elected to the new position of Membership Officer to assist the Treasurer. The subcommittee representatives on the MVC executive are Fiona Ivancsik (Business), John Ash (Garden Ramble), Maureen Moss (Garden) and Michael Truloff (Redmond Oval).
In the election held for the Business Subcommittee office bearers, Randall Edwards was returned as President and Ian Rogan as Secretary.
Join the CWA
The Millthorpe Branch of the Country Women's Association celebrates CWA Awareness 2014 with an afternoon tea in their rooms, 21 Pym Street, Millthorpe, on Tuesday, September 2 beginning at 3pm.
The event is a great opportunity for all women in the district that have ever thought of joining the CWA to get information on what it is and what it does, and to meet members informally for a chat over a cuppa.
For existing members, it will be a time to reflect on the achievements of the movement, both in Millthorpe and across the state.
Please RSVP by September 1 to Susan Chudleigh, 6365 5116.
