The closures – designed to make the event more safe – were used in the event for the first time this year.
But some residents affected by the change were not happy – so much so that council has received the petition with 190 signatures, which says bike riders need to take more responsibility for their own safety.
A report to councillors by city treasurer Bob Roach says the petition was received from Julie Fardon, who lives on Hobbys Lane Road.
“I am writing to you ... to make you aware of the anger in the community regarding the road closures during the B2B bike race,” the petition says. “Please note that this petition is not against the bike race as such, but is against the road closures associated with it.
“These road closures impact on people’s lives and livelihoods and the organisers of this race need to consider the residents in the area.
“Even though it is stated that the roads are closed for the safety of the bike riders, it is time that these riders take their share of the responsibility for their own safety and not place it all on the motorists.
“Local residents and people travelling through this region have the right to use these roads at all times.”
Mr Roach has recommended the matter be referred to council’s traffic committee for its consideration.
