The vehicle, attached to the Muogamarra station, near Hornsby in Sydney, was out in the morning driving along Hobbys Yards Road just north of Trunkey Creek when the incident happened.
The driver was to turn left onto a track that would lead the six crew members to the fire front, but instead they just missed the turn-off.
When the vehicle was put in reverse, it clipped a sign and the left side slipped into a ditch.
Emergency services attended the scene, but there were no reports of injuries.
Meanwhile, the fire, in the Copperhannia National Park, was still listed as "out of control" on the RFS website late yesterday afternoon.
The fire has burnt through more than 2000 hectares, with water-bombing aircraft continuing to assist on-the-ground efforts.
A scrub fire was also burning out of control at Tumbridge Wells, Four Mile Creek at Cadia.
