Secretary of the historical society, Rhonda Jones, said that the society wants to find out what sort of lamps the lamp post had originally.
“We've got a photo of the two elephants drinking from the water troughs because almost every house in Blayney has a photo of that,” she said.
“But the lamps aren’t in the photo.
“Hopefully there is a photo out there that can show us what it looked like.”
Mrs Jones said that the memorial lamp post was originally situated at the intersection of Church Street and Adelaide Street before it was relocated after traffic on the highway increased.
“Originally it was a memorial to Hector Black and David Ross Crichton who died of enteric fever in the Boer War,” she said.
“Then the community decided that they needed a coronation fountain and they added the troughs.”
Geoff Avard, a member of the RSL sub branch, said that relatives of the men who died at the war wanted the lamps relit but the society need to know what the style of the lights were.
“It's not officially designated as a memorial in state and national archives but they call it a monument of interest,” he said.
Mrs Jones said that the shire started collecting money for the memorial in 1902 and by 1907 they had raised enough to create the monument.
“There were five from the Blayney Shire who died and they all died of enteric fever,” she said.
“The families couldn't go over to see their boys' graves so the momentum to build memorials was there.”
This year Boer War Day will be held on the May 30.
