A new era began last week at the former Browns Creek gold mine with the official opening of a major horticultural production facility on the site. Australian Native Landscapes, Australia's largest producer of organic compost and landscape construction products, has established a state of the art horticultural production plant. It will eventually employ about 50 people as operations get into full swing.

Blayney Mayor Bruce Kingham officially opened the site and along with past Blayney Mayor John Davis was thanked for their commitment to the site. ANL Managing director Patrick Soars said they chose to establish the new facility at Blayney because of its strategic location to markets in the central and western areas of the state. The abundance of water and a huge stockpile of lime stone left over from the previous mining operation were added attractions of the site. Cr Kingham said some councilors had been reluctant to have a development that would involve a lot of heavy traffic and transport of biosolids from Sydney. However, the said councilors made the effort to travel to Sydney to inspect other ANL sites to check how they were managed. Mr Soars said initially the Browns Creek site would produce about 50,000 tones of compost and mulch products. This should rise to about 200,000 tones per year, in five years, he said.
Australian Native Landscapes (ANL) commenced operation in 1972 as a supplier of landscape materials. ANL purchased the Browns Creek Mine site in 2001. The acquisition and redevelopment of this particular site is the most significant expansion in our production, costing over 3 million dollars to establish the site. The Brown's Creek facility will particularly focus on a range of composted soil conditioners and mulches targeted specifically to the intensive agricultural, horticultural and vineyard markets. This operation will include the provision of a specialised spreading service following the recent acquisition of a purpose built compost and mulch spreader for both broadacre and row crop spreading. The opening of this facility will showcase the company's economic and organic alternatives for farm operators, government bodies and domestic customers alike.
