In-form Hodge frustrated at missing out again

16 Nov, 2008 12:00 AM

ANDREW SYMONDS' immediate Test recall has been hailed far and wide but the selection has left Brad Hodge shaking his head.

Hodge again showed on Friday night he is among the country's form batsmen with a man-of-the-match display in belting an unbeaten 63 in a Twenty20 triumph at the Gabba.

But his joy from another classy knock for the ACA All Stars against Australia was tempered by being overlooked once again for Test selection.

While Symonds has found himself back in the 13-man squad for the first Test against New Zealand, starting on Thursday at the Gabba, despite averaging just 13 in Shield cricket, Hodge is flying high for Victoria in both forms of the game.

But the 33-year-old is disillusioned at a lack of feedback from the four-man national selection panel and now appears a man beyond frustration after being picked for just six Tests, where he averaged a superb 55.

"I'm not really sure where I stand at the moment but all I can do is the same thing which I've done for a good decade now and that's make runs and continue to do what I do best and help Victoria," Hodge said.

The in-form No.3 is most bitter at the apparent inconsistency of selections, brought home by the promotion of the out-of-touch Symonds after completing a Cricket Australia rehabilitation program following the "gone fishing" drama.

"He's a tremendous player and I'd certainly want him on my side regardless of how he's performing," Hodge said. "[But] he hasn't set the world on fire in the short [time] since he's been playing domestic cricket. I suppose that's the criteria for getting selected to represent your country."

Hodge also struggles to take heart from Simon Katich's successful Test return after the NSW left-hander appeared to have his cards marked.

"We've always been in similar situations, myself and Simon," Hodge said. "Opportunities have been scarce and I'm happy for him, he's finally got a run at it over a decent period of time, something I've never got an opportunity at, I guess.

"Probably time's not on my side but there are other forms of the game which come around and as you can see my skills are still high.

"I don't think you ever really give up the dream or ambition until you get a tap on the shoulder, [but] sometimes the writing is on the wall …

"As long as I'm playing good cricket and continuing to strive hard, you never know."
