Blayney High student Matt Death has been selected to join the under 16’s men’s state softball team.
The team plays at the Blacktown Olympic Park which is said to be the best international diamond in the world and was the site of the Olympic softball events in 2000.
Matt travels to Sydney for training every Sunday and Tuesdays and commits himself to achieving the best he can. He also trains in Orange every Thursday.
Along with this, he furthers his skills by playing in the Blayney local competition, competing with teams around the local area in Orange.
Matt is set to play in the nationals in January, opening up a fantastic opportunity that may see him join forces with the Australian team in Sydney next year.
He is also contemplating giving up playing softball, and switching to baseball in the future.
Due to baseball being unavailable in this area, he will have to endure further extensive travelling to and from Sydney in order to gain success within his goals.
Matt began playing softball in the Blayney Public school team which took out the western region championships in 2006. This was the foundation for his career in softball.
The experience gave him the chance to play for the Western PSSA team and move on to form the Blayney softball team.
Along with travelling to the big city he managed to fit soccer in during winter and study for the year 9 exams into his busy schedule.
Matt couldn’t have achieved all he has without the support from his employer Paul Kevin who allows Matt to work around his training commitments as well as joining other local businesses to provide much needed sponsorship.
