Women rein supreme at Blayney heats

04 Feb, 2010 12:15 PM
Visiting women have dominated the heats of the Yirribee Stud Great Western Reinswomen's Championship at Blayney on Saturday, winning both and holding three of the top four positions going into the finals.

The three local riders, Ashlee Siejka, Emma Turnbull and Amanda Turnbull were expected to be pushing for a win in the new series but they didn't find the going easy.

Siejka is in second, one point behind Sydney driver Rebecca Brown, while Amanda Turnbull and Emma Turnbull find themselves further off the pace in fifth and equal sixth respectively.

The competition involves nominated drivers going into a draw to find out who they will steer in each race and points are awarded for where you finish in each race.

Ten points are awarded to a winning driver in the heats and each lower position is awarded one less point with the last of the 10 drivers earning one point. Points are doubled in the final.

Brown is at the front of the competition on consistency after finishing third and second in the two races for a total of 17 points while Siejka is in second with 16 points, a second and a fourth.

Broken Hill driver Cassie Robinson and Gunnedah pilot Sally Torrens, who both won a race, are in equal third with 14 points each while Amanda Turnbull has 11 and Emma Turnbull, 10.

Amy Day is the driver in last place with a ninth and a 10th and it was widely recognised that she had been hard done by in the draws.

"You can be very lucky or very unlucky in the draws," track presenter Terry Neil said.

"The two that Amy drew preformed very badly, breaking during the race and it certainly wasn't a reflection on her ability."

The first race couldn't have gone better for Torrens, who had drawn the Bernie Hewitt-trained Sheza Gold Digger and barrier three for the race.

She hit the lead early and was never headed comfortably winning while leaving Siejka and Brown to fight for second and third.

The Bathurst driver got Riverview Queen home 3.5 metres behind the winner while Brown's Show Your Hand was a further 3.4 off the pace.

Robinson got the best start in race two while driving Drama Prince for Kevin Hurst, getting from barrier five into the lead and like the first heat it meant she was never headed.

She did face a late challenge from Brown with Diamond John but she had to settle for second by 1.1 metres.

A further 17 metres back was Amanda Turnbull with Ablazing.

"The two horses that were able to get into the lead won, once they got there they were able to control things. I interviewed Broken Hill driver Cassie Robinson after her race and the track there is only 600 metres, so it's smaller than Blayney and she said if you get the lead there you have a very good chance of winning so she was very happy when the opportunity presented itself at Blayney," Neil said.

"It will be harder for drivers to lead all the way at Bathurst because it is a much bigger track."

The final of the Yirribee Stud Great Western Reinswomen's Championship will take place at Bathurst on Sunday afternoon, with double points on offer f
