Harness racing

While the Reinswoman's Championship was the main attraction of the Blayney racing meeting on Saturday, there was plenty of quality racing in the seven race card, including a dead heat and a trotting race.

The event unfolded in front of a healthy crowd and they knew they were in for a good day of racing when leading drivers John Vautin and John O'Shea couldn't be separated in the opening race.

Vautin was driving Ellejays Princess and O'Shea behind Stanley Vale in the $1000 Tattersalls Hotel Blayney NSW State Bred Bonus Three Year Old Pace (2000 metres).

Race three was another notable one because it was the Gentleman Train Trotters Exhibition and while there was only a small field of four, it didn't mean there wasn't action.

Doug Lee's Best Bits was the winner of the race with John Vautin driving Karaka Tooth into second for Graham Bullock.

Michael Munro claimed third but all three of them held the lead at some stage.

Lonely Bill brought up the rear of the field with owner-trainer Ken Davis describing it as a "conservative" run.

Davis is also the secretary of the Blayney club and a driving force behind trying to attract more interest in the trotting events.

He said Saturday's race was a good start.

"The trotting exhibition went faultlessly, there were three changes in lead and it was a good race. They all trotted well and I think people were impressed with what they saw," he said.

Davis was also pleased with the way the Blayney meeting went but admitted he thought they may have attracted a slightly bigger crowd and said he was especially happy the race meeting had been a record breaker.

"As a general promotion I thought it went very well. We had a record gate and record bar takings which was a great achievement considering we were up against picnic races in Orange and the dirt bikes in Bathurst," he said.

In other races, Bernie Hewitt claimed two wins, with one in the Reinswomen's Championship and Clancy Shannon in the $1000 Peter O'Brien Constructions Blayney Pace (2400 metres) while Super Party also got a second for the Georges Plains trainer.

Trent Rue and Graham Bullock also claimed victories.
