The Golden Memories Museum at Millthorpe is holding a machinery and mining day at the Museum in Park Street, Millthorpe on Saturday November 7 from 10am to 4pm.
John Lister, co-discoverer of payable gold at Ophir in 1851 is buried in Millthorpe and the museum has a fascinating collection of Lister objects including his firearms.
Also on show will be objects from the museum’s large collection of gold prospecting and mining memorabilia - a miners tent and equipment like gold pans, a windlass, gold washing cradle so you can try your skill at washing gold from the residue in the Trunkey Creek gold stamper that is in the Museum grounds.
There is also a walk through diorama of Browns Creek mine with original objects and the official opening of the Cadia Corner theatrette with a special display of the history of mining at Cadia at 1.30pm.
Other working exhibits on the day will include the blacksmith’s forge, patchwork craft demonstrations, stone crushing, hay baling, tractor, shingle splitting, shearing and cream and butter making demonstrations. Plus many more interesting machines, social history exhibits and the Clayton and Shuttleworth traction engine that worked around the area.
Food and drinks are available all day as well as local craft from Jacoba craft cottage.
